Or, for those who haven't been paying attention: an announcment of the live-blog plans.  It's been a while since I promoted my proper blog in this space.  I'm still kicking.  Barely, but I'm still kicking.

Last weekend, I announced my imminent return to the live-blog milieu.  Well, I regret to announce that my initial plan has been thwarted by the idiosyncrasies of the NFL broadcast schedule and the miserable football team in the Washington, DC market.  But I have something better to announce.

Remember last spring when a bunch of people cleaned up their bookshelves and (ostensibly) their residences and I didn't participate?  Well, I may have missed that party but I've got my own going on this weekend.  Starting tomorrow - or perhaps even tonight - I will be undertaking a major organization and purge of all the crap in my dingy hovel.  This will be my first spring cleaning ever, and some of the treasures I'm about to unearth haven't seen the light of day in a decade.  Or longer.  And I'll be live-blogging the whole process.  So stop on by this weekend.  This should be fun.  And by "fun" I mean - obviously - "moderately terrifying."

blogging hiatus

Maybe this is a bad strategy, but now that I have everything from Vox backed up this seems like a good time to take a short break from blogging.  And not a break like last April, when I half-heartedly posted every four or five days because of a sense of obligation.  I'm talking about a real break.  According to Wordpress, I generated 1,097 posts since June 2006.  Those posts were tagged with 1,052 unique tags and generated 8,679 comments.  I'd say that merits a few weeks off.  But don't worry - any of you who are still out there - I'll be back before the end of September, just in time to ramp up before the annual Rocktober festivities.

Let's face it - we all saw this coming.  In the least surprising news of the day, Vox has announced that it's closing up shop as of the end of the month.  Fortunately I've had a contingency plan in the works for a while (read: about a year) now.  I've already been backing up my blog periodically through Wordpress because I wasn't confident that Vox would give us even a month's warning.  My ultimate goal is to migrate four and a half years of gibberish and fart jokes onto a private domain.  But for the time being, I'll be setting up shop at http://absolutehotrod.typepad.com/.  It's easy, and it means I don't have to deal with transferring all the picture and songs and videos I've posted to another host just yet.

I'll be honest - I'm going to miss Vox.  It was extremely handy to have a one-stop-link for my friends and some people I didn't know who later became friends.  One link is easy to manage; a bunch of different links to blogs can get lost in the shuffle.  I'm secretly a big softie, so I sincerely hope the past four-plus years have meant as much to you as they have to me and that you will still find the time to visit me occasionally.  I'll be at typepad for now, and I'll let you know wherever I end up from there.  This will be my last post on Vox, and it makes me sad.

I'm gonna keep this short, because my fantasy football season starts in about half an hour and I've got some last minute cramming to do.  I've got scores to settle with Dabysan and Cap'n Crunch.  In other news: I never thought I'd say this, but I wish I could still link to Cap'n Crunch.  I miss his incoherent rambling.  I always enjoyed trying to decipher his prose.  It made me feel like a spy.

I have some more evidence that I didn't always hate birthdays.  My sisters and I all have birthdays within two weeks of each other.  That in and of itself is not a problem.  My mother reminded me recently, however, that what was a problem - at least for me - was that Sister #1 celebrated her birthday a week before mine.  I was the oldest, so by childhood logic my birthday should come first.  That doesn't make much sense now, and there's a decent argument to be made that it shouldn't have made sense in 1980 either.

But here's the thing: today is the last of three August birthdays (coincidentally, their spacing is off mine and my sisters' by only one day) and for the third straight year Scottie gets short shrift just because he falls last in the batting order.  I always struggle to come up with something to say by the time we get to this one.  And even now I've spent the whole birthday post blabbing about myself.  I am such a deadbeat uncle.  Here's wishing you the best today anyway, Scottie!  Have a great fourth birthday!
